A big boo-boo

I admit I haven't been paying much attention to the hp+Compaq slugfest merger. My initial assessment was that this is a Bad Idea, judging primarily from the results of Compaq's acquisition of DEC.

Whether or not the merger is a poor choice depends on where the threats to both companies are, and whether the strengths can be combined effectively. Impeding a successful combination is the challenge of integrating overlapping technologies which have an existing customer base, primarily operating systems and chip architectures. An existing trend makes this on the one hand more difficult, and on the other, easier.
