Oracle. Unbreakable. Right.
Just got the latest issue of Oracle magazine, and right there in front of my face is an Oracle/Sun advertisement. Oracle on Sun, whether Solaris or Linux, is unbreakable. And there's part of an URI in the ad. Let's see what they have to say, shall we?
Unbreakable, my ass.

The Logic of the Borg
Matt Croydon makes a comment that I've heard from a number of other, less flexible, Windows administrators:
I've found that overall Windows 2000 is pretty stable if you keep it at a production state. That means NO THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE goes on there unless there's a showstopping reason.
I find this opinion interesting in a morbid sort of way. One of the strongest selling points of Windows is its massive developer base. Yet that argument is null and void if you don't run third-party software. Still I've seen a number of shops who do exactly that, after buying the platform because of the developer base. The only time they run non-Microsoft software on their Microsoft operating system is when Microsoft doesn't have anything in that particular niche. Makes you wonder why Microsoft still has developers, though.
There is another way to keep NT up for the night-shift, and that is to strip the box down and not run Microsoft's applications.
