Mitch Wagner, who has monkeys in his pants, wrote a good overview of the emerging cybernetic ecosystem.
Security experts have been speculating for a long, long time about the possibility of releasing "good" worms and viruses, designed to help infected systems rather than harm them; most often by installing security patches and upgrades.
The biological analogies are obvious.
Including this one: higher organisms developed from simple building blocks. Virii are primitive life.
