A meta-directory is often thought of as a directory that contains directories. Some misunderstand meta-directories. In particular, they misunderstand what LDAP gives you in building meta-directories. LDAP gives you referrals. You do not need to build a giant directory containing all other directories. You merely point to the directory that holds what is sought. A meta-directory is a directory that contains information about other directories.

It is no longer necessary to synchronize data between disparate sources. It is necessary to speak the same access protocol, and maintain some similarity in the schema.
